    Purim is a joyous holiday that celebrates the rescue of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire by Esther and her bravery.
    King Ahasuerus (thought to be Xerxes I of Persia) had an adviser named Haman that concocted a plan to wipe out the Jewish people living in Persia. His plot was foiled, however, by Ahasuerus' new wife Queen Esther. Feasts, charitable giving, and even dressing in costume all play a role in this holiday.
