Artist Lawren S. Harris (Canadian, 1885–1970) created a distinctive visual language, inspired first and foremost by the Canadian landscape. This triptych, circa 1914, depicts a glacier-stripped hillside with Georgian Bay in the distance. By 1918, in response to his exploration of the northeast Lake Superior coast, Harris had resolved to purge his art of excess detail and to seek out the basic structures underlying natural forms. His subsequently more austere paintings of trees, lakes, mountains, shorelines and skies express his spiritual experience of Lake Superior, the Rockies and the Arctic.
