A year before creating this cover for the May 1, 1928, New York Fashions issue of Vogue, Georges Lepape made his first trip to New York where he discovered that cocktails, not ice water, were the Americans’ preferred beverages and, from a moving bus, tried and failed to count the number of storeys in the lofty buildings that still form Manhattan’s cityscape. Note the similarities between the flapper’s dress and her surroundings; Deco-era fashion was sleek and aerodynamic, partaking, as the magazine would later note in another context, “of the same quality of dynamics as the best of the tall white skyscrapers.”
