Robert Harper knew a sweet spot when he bought the rights to the ferry across the Potomac at The Point. A charter established Shenandoah Falls at Mr. Harper's Ferry, which was shortened to Harpers Ferry. Inspired by the view from the rock outcropping that now bears his name, future president Thomas Jefferson said it was "perhaps one of the most stupendous scenes in nature." Due to its location at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, George Washington established the National Armory in Harpers Ferry. The armory's location led to the most famous event here, John Brown's Raid, one of the key events leading to the Civil War. After the war, it became home to historic Storer College. Today hundreds of thousands of people come to enjoy the scenery, hike the Appalachian trail, experience the history and beauty of the unique Harpers Ferry. 500 piece jigsaw puzzle.
