The original plans for the U.S. Capitol building were by William Thornton, an amtaeur architect who was late submmitting his plans to the design competition authorized by President Washington. However, none of the submissions during the competitions run had been deemed satisfactory, while both Washington and Jefferson praised Thornton's, late but ultimately successful, submission.
